This archaic method of proving that you are who you say you are has been made obsolete thanks to EMV readers and much more advanced fraud fighters. Most people just squiggle something and don't take it very seriously anyway.

Another reason for the check-out shortcut is to streamline the process and make credit cards more user friendly. Companies want you to continue to pay those high interest rates!

Studies have also shown that people are apt to spend more money using credit cards, and are more likely to reel in their spending if they see the cash in their wallet physically dwindling away.
