I have become obsessed with mail boxes because they are disappearing fast! The U.S. Postal Service is pulling thousands of them because more people are paying bills online and corresponding through e-mail. I bought a cool mail box at Goodwill for $5.00 and bought a sterling silver vintage charm for my charm bracelet. I troll flea markets and Craigslist looking for them. They quickly becoming a piece of Americana.

Here's a listing for this old mail box!

Here are some more vintage mailboxes on Craigslist.

Remember when the mailbox was a creative expression? Driving through neighborhoods they sometimes matched the house, represented a favorite sports team, was carefully hand painted or was made out of something unusual. There was something exciting about the daily ritual of walking across the street to collect birthday cards and letters, but I'm afraid that like his friend telephone booth, mail box may become obsolete. Over the past 20 years, 200,000 mailboxes have vanished from rural areas, city streets and the suburbs. All across the country those blue collection boxes are also disappearing.
