Back in the '80s and '90s, nearly every small town had a carnival.

Unlike Maine's agricultural fairs, like the Windsor Fair & Fryeburg Fair, these carnivals were very basic. Typically, they would have a midway with rides, games, and food vendors. Occasionally, they would also have a few sideshows.

Sure, they weren't the kind of attraction where you'd spend the entire day, but they were a great way to kill a few hours with the family.

In recent decades, these carnivals have become a rarity, but the Augusta Downtown Alliance is bringing that tradition back.

Just like last year, Smokey's Greater Shows will be back with a midway filled with rides, games, and food vendors.

As is often the case with new events, we can expect to see new additions to the fair each year.  For example, an exciting new addition for 2024 is Cushnoc Brewing Company's beer tent.

For the latest on the Kickoff to Fall Fair follow the event on Facebook.

Hopefully, we'll continue to see this great event get bigger and bigger each year.
