Maine School Warns Parents About Potentially Deadly TikTok Challenge
Over the last decade, we have seen social media challenges go from being positive, like the ALS fundraising 'ice bucket challenge', to being dangerous or even deadly.
Recently, we've seen challenges that involve smashing gallon jugs of milk on the floor of grocery stores, challenges where participants eat a spoonful of cinnamon, and challenges where people allow their legs to be kicked out from under them.
Well, there is another dangerous TikTok challenge you need to keep an eye out for.
According to a letter to a letter that went to some parents from the Waterville School District, Chromebooks (the school-issued laptops that students use to work remotely) were not sent home with students on Wednesday over concerns about a new TikTok challenge.
The letter explains that the challenge involves sticking an object, like pencil lead or even a gum wrapper, into the laptop. The goal of doing this is to create a spark. It won't come as a surprise to many people that doing this could lead to the device being damaged or starting a fire.

In the letter, Waterville Junior High School Principal Don Roux explains that his biggest concern with the challenge is that students could attempt it at home. If the spark was large enough, there is a chance that it could catch bedding, drapes, or furniture on fire. That would put everyone in the home at risk.
Fortunately, at this point, no one has been injured by this risky behavior.
