The Largest Bookstore in Maine Will Take You a Week to Explore
If you are under the age of 50, there is a good chance that you do most of your reading on a screen.
We read magazine articles on our phones, we read work documents as PDFs on our laptops, and we read books on our Kindles (or on the Kindle app on our phones and tablets).
We rarely pick up a physical book or magazine.
However, there is no denying that there is something magical about flipping through a printed book or magazine. The feel, the smell.... Yeah, if you know, you know.
If you love printed books and old school magazines, you need to make a trip to Maine's largest bookstore.
The Big Chicken Barn Books & Antiques
Located on historic Route 1 in Ellsworth, Maine, the Big Chicken Barn Books & Antiques occupies a big, old chicken barn!
We've been told that the store takes up the entirety of the barn and features over 300,000 books and magazines.
If you are a history geek, like I am, you are going to love this part: many of the books are old! Some of the books and magazines date back to the mid-1800s.
The store is open seven days a week. They are only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.
According to the store's website, the business:
was established in 1986 by Annegret and Michael Cukierski. What was going to be a part-time hobby has grown into a thriving business that is open year-round. In 2001, their son, Chad, joined the family business and you may spot the 3rd generation wandering around the store from time to time as well.
You can read more about the store on the business's website.
