Maine has been a popular tourist destination for hundreds of years.

Of course, over time, the way that people spend their time in Maine has changed immensely.

Beginning in the middle of the 19th century, the families of wealthy businessmen from Boston and New York would escape the summer heat (and smell) of these cities by spending several months living in mansions that dotted Maine's rugged coastline.

At the same time, inland Maine was becoming a haven for those who loved to hunt and adventure through the deep wilderness.

In recent years, Maine has become a family destination for people of all income levels.  While there are ritzy spots along the state's coast, there are many places people who are on a budget can visit for a few days without having to take out a second mortgage.

For many people, camping is one of the most affordable ways to experience the beauty of Maine.

Many of our favorite campgrounds have been around for decades, but what is the oldest campground in Maine?

The Oldest Campground in Maine

According to the campground's website, Libby's Oceanside Campground has been in business for over a century.

Located in York, Maine, Libby's has been around since 1923.  The best part is that Libby's is right on the beach.

The website explains:

Here at Libby’s our location and beaches remain our primary attraction. We offer an unsurpassed setting for those who love being oceanside. Enjoy breathtaking ocean views, fresh salt air breezes and the dynamic surf. Adjacent to Libby’s is 1 1/2 mile Long Sands Beach. Ocean beaches, area attractions and shopping are all nearby.

The campground has 45 oceanfront camper sites.  These sites put you right on the water!  Just take a few steps and you'll be right in the ocean!

If that's not your thing, you can check out one of the 18 pull-through sites or, if you are looking for something smaller, they have 12 van-sized sites.
