Start Your Engines! Lawnmower Racing Takes Center Stage at This Maine Fair
One of the many great things about Maine’s agricultural fairs is the variety of entertainment they offer.
Nearly every Maine fair, from the Northern Maine Fair to the Fryeburg Fair, offers nightly entertainment. Often this comes in the form of bands (both local and national touring acts), but it could also be demolition derbies or stunt shows.
One of the most unique fair entertainment offerings can be found at the Oxford County Fair.
Lawnmower Racing
What is lawnmower racing? Well, it is exactly what it sounds like. Grown men and women race ride-on lawnmowers on a dirt track.
Believe it or not, there is a United States Lawnmower Racing Association. Just like it sounds, they are an organization dedicated to furthering the sport of lawnmower racing. There's also a British version of the organization.
According to the USLMRA website, the first organized lawnmower race was put on by an Indiana Lions Club in 1963. The website explains that that particular race is still held each 4th of July.

At one point, The Nashville Network (which has since been rebranded as Paramount Network) was airing lawnmower racing events. Speedvision, a network focused on motorsports racing, also aired races.

The Oxford County Fair
One of the more unique offerings at the Oxford County Fair is the chance to see lawnmower races.
This year, the races will happen at 6 PM on Thursday, September 12th.
There are five classes of races: stock, single-cylinder modified, twin-cylinder modified, Ladies, and Over 50. Get all the details on the Oxford County Fair website.
