Even though everyone says that "time flies", it is often hard to quantify that flying time.

For example, can you believe that we have been dealing with the replacement of the ageing Ticonic Bridge in Waterville/Winslow for just over two years?  About two years ago, we reported that the $50 million project was going to be getting underway in March of 2023.

Even though there is a lot more work to be done, it does look like work is finally starting to wind down.

According to an article in the KJ, one lane of the replacement bridge will open in the middle of June.

At this point, the plan is to open the eastbound lane on June 16th.  The hope is that opening this lane will alleviate some of the traffic issues that have been happening in the area on weekday afternoons.

During the period when the span was completely closed, traffic was detoured to other area bridges, primarily the Carter Memorial Bridge.

Believe it or not, the first version of the Ticonic Bridge opened in 1909.  Originally, it was used as a trolley bridge.  Later, sidewalks for pedestrians and lanes for traffic were added.  Eventually, the trolley tracks were removed.

Over the decades, the bridge did undergo overhauls and updates, but at over 110 years old, it needed to be replaced.
