Super Harvest Moon with a Partial Lunar Eclipse Coming to Maine
I know what your first question is, why so many different names for a moon?
There's a corn moon, harvest moon, a full moon, even a wine moon! So what moon are we in for here in Maine in the month of September? ALL OF THEM! Well, pretty much!
Mainers can look to the skies this month to take in a stunning celestial event. The harvest moon, which is also the full moon because it’s the closest to the autumnal equinox, will rise on September 17th, according to the almanac.
But babes, this isn’t like any full moon, it’s also going to be a super moon! That means, it will look massive and brighter than ever because of how close it is to earth.
On the night of September 17th, there will be a partial lunar eclipse which you can see in some regions. This will level up the show.
While the partial eclipse might not be seen everywhere in the nation, the super moon will still be a stunning sight in Maine. This is very good news because we're in for the full experience with this celestial show.
According to the almanac, the full moon will rise on the evening of September 17, 2024.
Peak illumination will happen at 10:34 P.M. Eastern Time. So make sure you get your lawn chairs set up outside with your popcorn and sweetheart to share a kiss under this epic moon.
Why is it called the Harvest Moon? The Old Farmer’s Almanac pulls its full Moon names from Native American, Colonial American, and European traditions.
This video from the Old Farmers Almanac on YouTube gives you a bit of "moon science" and explains the significance of the Full Corn Moon, which takes place in September.
