Vacation Scams Maine Travelers Need to Watch Out for This Summer
I was chatting with my best friend about our upcoming family vacation and we discovered that there is something else you should pack in your brain before the sunscreen: a huge dose of skepticism.
Vacation scams are becoming more convincing every year, and scammers know this is when many Mainers are booking beach trips, cruises, and last-minute escapes.
Remember when booking a vacation was easy? You'd call your travel agent, pick your dates, maybe call the hotel directly to reserve a room, buy your amusement park tickets over the phone, and you were all set. It wasn't exactly fast, but you knew who you were talking to.
Vacation Scams to Look Out For Before You Book Your Trip

Thanks to AI, fake websites, cloned booking confirmations, and convincing emails or text messages, it's becoming harder to tell what's real and what's designed to steal your money.
The numbers are eye-opening.
According to the FDC, Americans reported losing more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, a 25% increase from the year before.
Online scams continue to be one of the fastest-growing ways criminals target consumers, and travel scams are especially common during the busy summer vacation season.
But besides the five scams to lookout for below, the biggest rule? If the deal feels too good to be true, it probably is.
Book directly with trusted companies whenever possible, never feel pressured to pay immediately, and always verify before sending money.
