2 Classic New England Spots Named Best Places to Take a Family Vacation in the US
When a New Englander plans a family vacation, there's a lot to think about to make sure you, your significant other, your kids (and maybe pets if you bring them), and whoever else is coming have a fun time.
But there's no doubt that whether you pick a staycation or just want to hop a few states over, you've got plenty of options in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
So it's no surprise that U.S. World & News named two New England spots on their 2024 list of best family vacations in the United States.
Landing No. 19 on the list is Boston, a vibrant city steeped in history, with a variety of activities and places to check out that your family will enjoy. (It's only about two hours from Portland, Maine, and a little over an hour from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.)
You've got the likes of the Freedom Trail, where kids can become time travelers exploring important sites of the American Revolution, and The Boston Children’s Museum, with interactive exhibits sure to spark curiosity. Don't forget the New England Aquarium for some fishy fun.
That's not to mention there's TD Garden (for sports and music), Faneuil Hall (shopping and food), and Fenway Park (go Sox!)
And that's only the tip of the iceberg for that location.
U.S. World & News also named Cape Cod as a top family vacation spot scoring the No. 5 slot on the list for a different yet equally delightful family experience.
Take in the sun, splash in the waves and build sandcastles on its pristine beaches or bike the scenic Cape Cod Rail Trail. You've also got The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, whale-watching tours from Provincetown, and a huge inflatables and water park.
Plus, you'll definitely find some delicious food and drinks to enjoy in such a picturesque location. (And it's only 3+ hours to get there from Portland, Maine, or almost 3 hours from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.)
On the other hand, Maine and New Hampshire should have made the U.S. World & News list for family vacations even though they didn't.
In Maine, Acadia National Park has a treasure trove of family-friendly hikes and stunning coastal views. Portland is a foodie family's dream. Saco has Funtown/Splashtown and Aquaboggan. The list goes on for the state nicknamed "Vacationland."
In New Hampshire, the White Mountains offer endless outdoor activities, from hiking and zip-lining to Story Land in Glen. Nearby, Lake Winnipesaukee is perfect for boating, fishing, and lakeside fun.
Honestly, there's so many places to take the family in New England and keep everyone entertained. Ready for a trip? Boston? Cape Cod? Somewhere else?
