Do you have a favorite bakery in Maine? One that delivers delicious treats, fresh breads and satisfying flavors?

Well, there's one hidden gem in the Pine Tree State, that's gotten national attention for its inventive and exciting offerings.

Bon Appetit has named Onggi in Portland, Maine, one of the most creative bakeries in the U.S., putting this small, yet innovative establishment on the culinary map.

According to Portland Old Port, the fermentation market, bakery, and cafe opened in 2021 and then moved into a new location on Washington Ave in 2022.

Started by three friends and "food lovers," Erin Zobitz, Marcus Im, and Amy Ng enjoyed the benefits of fermentation and wanted to share that with the community, their website states. Thus Onggi was born.

Bon Appetit notes that while Onggi does provide a number of "treasures" in the market section, it's the baked goods that give the business that extra pop.

The magazine lists off memorable items like kimchi-cheddar-corn souffles, miso in a scallion-flecked scone, or "chocolate chip cookies bearing an unmistakable sourdough twang."

And high-scored Yelp reviews seem to echo Bon Appetit's sentiments with reviews pointing out the fresh and tasty food, magical atmosphere, and of course, the famous sourdough chocolate chip cookie.

Who can just eat one cookie?

One review noted that it's "a beautiful little shop with such cool and fun variety of things (spices, sauces, oils, etc. and merchandise, pottery etc.) and a little bakery/cafe that also has yummm baked goods!"

Bon Appetit also states that a bakery like Onggi stands out for its innovation and creativity because its food has a story to tell. It's more than just a mass production of something, and customers can see that when they enter this quaint little shop and order.

For food lovers, it sounds like a trip to this charming bakery is a must. Whether you're a fan of classic pastries or curious about innovative new flavors, Onggi promises an unforgettable experience that celebrates the art of baking in every bite.
