I Can’t Tell If This is a Scam or a Warning for This Mainer
I got an email from Party City, and I honestly can't figure out if it's a scam or a warning.
Party City closed its two Maine stores in February as the company filed for bankruptcy for the second time in as many years. That's why this email caught my attention.
'Party City has some exciting news to share with you!'
The email I got started with the news that New Amscan PC, LLC is the new owner of Party City. It went on to say that the new owners intend to bring the same services,
...you’ve come to love from Party City, including brick-and-mortar stores and an e-commerce platform. And there's even more to celebrate, as Party City is being reimagined to once again be your go-to destination for everything you need to throw the perfect party. Is this a scam or a warning I got in Maine?
After the happy part of the email, it went into naming a bunch of laws or ordinances that they said they were complying with. They said in this email that they would NOT share personal information, including name, phone number, email address, address, or purchase history, to the new owners UNTIL 30 days AFTER the date of the email. Then they said that after that, if they haven't heard from everyone who got the email, all bets are off, and they'll share anything they want.
Here's why I think it may be a scam. The email referenced several times privacy@partycity.com. That was a clickable link every time in the email. I did not click. I did write to that address saying DO NOT SHARE ANY OF MY INFORMATION.
Is this real? Every time I went to Party City, they would ask for my email address - without fail! I remember it annoying me to no end. Did they ask for it, so they could do this? Or is this just another phishing scam using scare tactics to get you to click on something? I didn't click, so I simply don't know.
