You've probably heard someone say "there's a dispensary around every corner" when it comes to Maine.

The marijuana industry in Maine boomed quickly with business opportunities for both recreational and medical. Total cannabis sales between the two sectors approached $500 million in 2023.

But the past couple of years have been a different story. Experts say the marijuana industry in Maine has reached a maturation point. There's market saturation, prices have begun falling and some larger operations are swallowing up smaller ones.

If you need some proof, look no further than a recently closed dispensary in one of the busiest business districts in Maine.

Cheech & Chong's Dispensoria in Portland, Maine, Has Permanently Closed

In October of 2024, the city of Portland was buzzing because a pair of celebrities were visiting town. Those celebrities were Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, who were visiting the city for the grand opening of a new dispensary branded with their names.

Fast forward 13 months later and the Cheech & Chong Dispensoria has permanently closed. Everything has been removed from the store including signage and the Google business listings have stated that the dispensary is no longer in business at 58 Exchange Street.

Cheech & Chong's Dispensoria in Bangor, Maine, No Longer Listed As Well

Cheech & Chong's Dispensoria was brought to Maine as a partnership with a Bangor-based cannabis company called East Coast Gold Inc. They opened two Cheech & Chong branded locations in Portland and Bangor.

While the Portland location has been deemed permanently closed, the Bangor location has also been removed from the Cheech & Chong dispensoria website. Google still lists the business as active.
