5 New England States Rank as the Best in the US for Quality of Life
Well, duh.
You don't have to tell someone from New England that living here is the best. We already know that. But somebody at cnbc.com (who probably spent a lot of time and money on a survey) dug into the entire country and came up with the same thing. Here are a few reasons why.
They could have just asked us. Here are the results.
Five Out of Six New England States Are Among the Best in the U.S.
#9: New Hampshire
New Hampshire is tied with New York. The Red Sox fan in me hates that, but whatever.
The article says that New Hampshire is the healthiest state with the lowest rate of premature death. Crime is also very low, with "only" 25 homicides for the year of 2022 (maybe because it was a pandemic and the bad guys all had COVID?). Overall, NH scored a B.

Also #9: Massachusetts
Massachusetts is the 2nd healthiest state in the country, according to the article. Workers in the Bay State have mandatory sick and family leave, which is a big plus. The article cites air quality as a problem in the Bay State, so that may have factored in to the overall score, but it's still in the top 10. Overall, Massachusetts scored a B.
Also #9: Connecticut (What the Heck?)
Low crime rate is cited, like the other states in New England, with only 150 offenses per 100,000 people in 2022. Worker's protection is strong, like Massachusetts, but the air quality isn't great. Score, you guessed it, a B.
#2: Maine (VACATIONLAND!)
The article states that Maine is the safest in the country, child care is accessible and affordable, and health care is abundant too. The state gets an A grade. However, they still cite air quality as a weakness. Have they ever been to Acadia? C'mon, now.
#1: Vermont
Okay, here's where the clean air comes in. Out of any of the surrounding states, Vermont has the cleanest air, with ozone pollution practically non-existent. Childcare is also abundant and the crime rate is very low. It gets an overall score of A+.
New England is the Best
The article may have used all kinds of metrics, but they really got it right when they chose New England states. I've always said that this part of the world has everything, like mountains, oceans, forests, city life (if you want it), four seasons, and amazing healthcare, but the best reason to be here is the people.
If you had to live anywhere, where would it be?
