Take a Wicked Fun New England Road Trip to Stowe, Vermont’s Classic Candy Store
Stowe, Vermont
Not too long ago, my husband and I went to the Stowe Jazz Festival in Stowe, Vermont. The festival has been going on for quite a few years now, and seems to grow every year on the grounds of the Alchemist Brewery.
It's a very cool event. However, most of the time when I'm in Stowe, I can be found in all the downtown shops. One of my very favorites is the Stowe Mercantile at 38 Main Street in Stowe, Vermont.
If you like anything old-fashioned, chances are, you're going to love the Stowe Mercantile. The shop should have been painted in a Norman Rockwell painting. It reminds me of Calef's Country Store in Barrington, New Hampshire.
The Mercantile is located in a building with a few other shops right there on Main Street. There's a bookstore, clothing boutique, and a cafe. Those places are great too. BUT, when you go downstairs into the Mercantile, you will walk into quintessential New England.
The Mercantile has all kinds of local flavor foods (and they give samples!), gifts, a toy section, and even a piano for the customers to play. You wouldn't believe the talent that sits down to tickle the ivories.
The best part about the Mercantile, however, is the selection of candy.
You can fill up the bag and pay by the pound. You have to be careful, however, as the bag can get filled up pretty quickly. Before you know it, you'll have two or three bags full of delicious, old-fashioned candy!
I highly recommend this place any time of year, but be warned, if you travel to Stowe during the fall, you and everyone else will be "leaf-peeping." If you don't mind tourists from around the world, have at it. Otherwise, Stowe seems to always be busy, but just a wee bit more when the foliage is brightest.
