Nothing says summertime like the smell of skunk spray wafting through your open windows at night or clinging to your dog's coat as he tries to run to the safety of your brand new living room couch! We've heard the old chestnut about tomato juice. It's fine for a temporary fix, but after getting a breath of fresh air you will again smell skunk.

Here is a much better recipe for getting rid of skunk smell. These are ingredients that you can keep on hand at home and camp. You can not mix it ahead of time however, which is why it hasn't been marketed. This formula really works and it is cheap, biodegradable and eco-friendly! A "Mythbusters" show even confirmed its effectiveness!

  • A quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • A quarter cup of baking soda
  • A teaspoon or two of liquid soap
If you are using it on a pet, do it outside. The less contact your skunked pet has with your house, the better. Administer the antidote before putting them in your bathtub.

Because they are dumb. Many predatory mammals avoid skunks. Not dogs, they just don't get it. Skunks are nocturnal and are up and about at the same time that my dogs need to go out, early morning and in the evening. Keep your dogs leashed or tied to keep them from playing with what they may think of as a pretty kitty. Another suggestion is to not attract them by leaving your pet's food outdoors. They are omnivores so they are interested in ALL food, including your trash, so put a lid on it!
Does this solution work for skunked beer too?...
