On June 20, 1975 a movie about an angry fish opened in about 500 theaters around the country. It was called Jaws, it was directed a guy named Steven Spielberg, it was scary as hell, and it changed the world forever. Its unique release strategy (wide instead of limited), intense television marketing campaign, and record-breaking box office essentially created the summer movie season (and made Spielberg a household name). 40 years later, regardless of its impact, Jaws remains a masterpiece, and a much better and more interesting movie than the vast majority of so-called summer blockbusters that it birthed.
It's summertime in Maine! And you what that means...chance of a thunderstorm pretty much everyday. Yesterday (May 27), a strong one pulled through Aroostook County. A church in the small town of Grand Isle (population 400 and sumpthin') was struck by a big, loud bolt of lightning.
Today it's an American act that gives The Beatles a challenge on the charts, but it's (probably) not who you think it is; you got a 1980's Festivalthat just doesn't feel as cool as the ones that were held in the '70's; and Happy Birthdayto a rocker who has been on the radio every day since the late Sixties!!!
How hot is it? Well, hot enough for the Hillbilly to do his first report in a short sleeve shirt. Don't worry though, the suspenders are still there...just no more flannel. We've gotten accustomed to gettin' the weather from him 'straight and to the point' with plenty of 'colorful' adverbs and adjectives. But in this report, I didn't hear any swearin' at all!
The mighty, mighty J. Geils Band will bring blues-rock at its best back to Blimpville this summer! Peter Wolf, Magic Dick, Seth Justman, and Danny Klein are bringing the Houseparty to the Maine State Pier on Thursday September 3rd just before Labor Day weekend!
