Herb considers himself luckiest guy in the world to be able to captain one of the greatest rock stations in the USA! That's why the call him "The Captain," right? He's been on the Blimp for over 30 years, and no two days have ever been the same. He calls Blimp listeners “friends I’ve never met,” and it’s true as they share a common bond of living in Maine and a passion for Rock and Roll. He also enjoys working with so many local charities and businesses as well. He's wicked proud to represent Townsquare Media as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Maine Association of Broadcasters and as a board member of NESCom at Husson University.

This Driver Allegedly Gave Westbrook, Maine, Police a False Name, and It Didn’t Go Well
It's pretty much a good rule of thumb. When you get pulled over by the police you give your real name. Now, don't get me wrong. There have been plenty of occasions (not law-enforcement related) when I have given my friend's name and not mine. But those situations were pretty much all in college and in bars and I would rather not get into that today. Last week someone was pulled over by our heroes at the Westbrook Police Department. This guy went with the "different name" strategy and it did not work out.
We Know He’s Wearing a Mask, But Can You Help Auburn, Maine Police ID This Man?
Remember the old days, you know, 2019? There was no way in hell that you could walk into some stores with a mask on. And if you SAW someone with a mask on, you would stay the heck away and probably warn the manager. Now, almost everyone is wearing a mask, which is a good thing if you are a thief. Especially with zillions of surveillance cameras around. But have no fear because even though people wear masks, we know Maine is one big small town and we know EVERYBODY. The Auburn Police Department has released this photo of a person that they hope you can help identify.
Is It COVID or Just Your Usual Maine Spring Allergies? Here’s How To Tell the Difference.
Spring is here and that means allergy season. The pollen is starting to kick in from the pollen in oak, pine, and maple trees. Of course, all of this as we still deal with the pandemic. Now, I don't know about you but if I'm being honest I must admit that whenever I get ANYTHING that isn't normal for my health these days, I instantly assume that I have COVID. Yes, I know it's irrational, but I know many of us to feel that way. The feeling doesn't last long. I calm down and go about my day. And I have wicked Spring allergies, so I know I will be wondering if my allergies are really allergies. The CDC has some great advice when figuring out which is which. Of course, you should always contact your doctor if you have any concerns.
You Know It’s Time To Buy A New Truck In Maine When…
I totally understand that we Mainers are frugal. That we will get every nickel out of our homes, our equipment, and our vehicles. Especially during these COVID times, when there's sometimes not a lot of money to go around. But you need to know when to say "When." Over the years my wife has literally watched me run down the street in tears as a tow truck would take away my old car to the junk pile. "Maybe I could get another year out of her... " So I totally empathize with the owner of this vehicle that our heroes at the Maine State Police pulled over this week.
Bagpiper Serenades St Paddy’s Day Traffic in Downtown Portland
St Patrick's Day in Portland is always one of the best days of the year. Except for last year. Oh, and this year. Usually, the bars are full, people are singing and dancing in the streets, the St Paddy's Day parade goes down Commercial Street, and the city is buzzing...in more ways than one! So it was a joy to find one guy who wouldn't let a global pandemic stop his years-long tradition of playing his bagpipes for the people of Portland. Meet George, from Pine Point. George has played his bagpipes on St Patrick's Day at the iconic Miss Portland Diner for many years. With COVID, George took his gig outside and played a free concert for traffic passing by on Marginal Way. He looked great in the kilt and sounded fantastic! Thank you, George and the Miss Portland Diner for keeping the spirit of St Paddy's Day alive. I say we put George at the head of the St. Patrick's Day Parade next year!
Would You Ski Jump Off New Hampshire’s “Sleeping Giant”?
Did you know that New Hampshire is the home to a very historic ski jump? The Nansen Ski Jump, just north of Berlin on Route 16 in Milan, NH was, at one time, the largest ski jump in the country! In fact, it's now a historic site and a state park. The jump is a doozy, with a 225-foot vertical drop. There's something about ski jumping that both thrills and scares the crap out of me. One minute I want to go. Then I watch one of the videos below and hide under my desk. I always wonder how you train to jump? I know you start with bumps, but at some point, you have to "jump into the deep end" as it were and just go for it.
Maine’s Longest-Running 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tourney Goes Virtual
The C-U Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge has been happening for 27 years. Usually, hundreds of Mainers get together at the giant USM gym in Gorham to play 3-on-3 and raise a ton of money for charity. The Swish-Out Challenge started in 1994, had seven teams, and raised $575. Last year, the tournament had nearly 60 teams and raised $50,000 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Total it all up and the tournament has raised $525,000 for children with cancer and their families. That’s amazing. And these great folks are not going to let the pandemic stop Maine’s longest, continuous-running charity basketball tournament.
