According to an article in NewsTimes.com, beginning August 1, 14-year-olds will be allowed to work at restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as they have work permits.

Maine's Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations has announced the move to address Maine's labor shortage in the tourism and service industries.

Maine already allows 15-year-olds to stock inventory or bus tables, according to the article. The new change will help with restaurants and other establishments during the busy summer months. Several states already allow 14-year-olds to work at such places.

The bureau won't be holding a public hearing on the proposal, but will take comments until July 20th.
