103-Year-Old Remarkable Maine Veteran Lives Alone, Drives and Shops By Himself
So Armand Martin actually turns 103 on March 1, but I'm rounding up!
Armand was born in Frenchville, Maine back in 1919. He lives on his own, he drives on his own, and people of Madawaska spot him shopping on his own. Fiddle Head Focus did a great piece on Armand who shows no signs of slowing down.
When you read about Maine having one of the oldest populations in the country, you don't often think that they are active members of society. Many in Madawaska look up to Armand as an inspiration. He is a WWII Veteran who doesn't look at day over 70!
When Armand left the house to work, he was only 16. One of the jobs he had was at Baxter State Park putting the big rocks that are along the road. They are still there today. He's the oldest of nine kids in his family. He was married twice, both times to women named Yvette! What a handsome fellow. In an interview with Liz Morneault, he talks about Yvette breaking up with him. That's why he joined the army!
They 'took up' again and ended up getting married!
He has five kids: Gene, David, Roger, Phillip, and Phillip's twin sister Phyllis.
Everyone always wants to know what the secret to life is for centenarians. For Armand, it's his favorite pastime of reading. He loves old westerns and fiction the best. He also watches what he eats and exercises. He's on his treadmill every day when the weather isn't that great, but he'd rather be outside pounding the streets. He likes to walk at least a mile every day.
Yup. He still drives. He'll do the trips to the grocery store or pharmacy, but he has one of his three boys (who also live in Madawaska) take him if he needs to go beyond the town. He totaled his car 5 years ago and ended up with no wheels for a while. That didn't last long and he bought a new car when he was 101 years old.
With his new car, he doesn't plan on quitting driving any time soon. A neighbor predicted he'd live to be 310. Armand says he feels pretty good and isn't ruling anything out.
