A seal pup was rescued after getting lost and trying to cross Bayside Road in Ellsworth.

According to the Ellsworth American, police were called to make sure the pup was safe. With the waters high after the recent rain, the pup somehow found his way into a brook on one side of the street and then at some point decided to cross the road. Police officers contacted Allied Whale at College of the Atlantic to ask what they should do next. The pup was responsive, alert and seemed happy so Allied Whale told the officers that it was okay to release him back into the ocean.

Officers put him into a plastic tote which he seemed very content in and drove him back to a boat ramp where they set him free and watched as he happily swam away.

If you should ever find a baby seal, do not try to touch it or move it. All marine mammals are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and it is illegal to touch them. Depending on where you are when you spot a pup alone, the mother may be back. You can report it however to to the Maine Marine Animal Reporting Hotline at 1-800-532-9551 and they'll make sure the pup is okay.
