These Maine Kids Are Giving Back by Picking Up Trash, One Piece at a Time

A local Lewiston woman, Amanda Fessenden, her husband and children, did something respectable this weekend, taking part in an important challenge. This is something that normally is ignored by many and noticed by few.

Amanda got this idea from Mr. Drew and His Animals too, of Lewiston.

He says that following about his, "One Piece Challenge."

 As of late, litter has been really bothering me. Everyday I am picking up other people’s trash. At my Center, In my neighborhood, at the beach, at campgrounds and summer camps, gas station, grocery store, wherever I am. What annoys me the most is seeing and picking up trash that is 3’ away from a trash can. Close enough is not good enough. What it comes down to is if you litter, you are just damned lazy. So I got thinking.

There are 7.5 billion people on this planet. If everyone picks up 1 piece of trash, no matter how small. That is 7.5 billion pieces of trash in one day. Now times that by 365 days. That is two trillion seven hundred thirty-seven billion five hundred million pieces of trash in one year. Now I realize that 7.5 billion includes young children, seniors and other people that can’t do this challenge, so maybe we pick up 3 pieces each day, 1 for you and 2 for those that can not. It really is not hard for us to do. It is a change of our attitude. That simple.

This inspired Amanda to educate her kids and they wanted to do their part. Amanda told me that the Earth can only give so much if no one takes care of it.

I noticed a photo of her children, online, pulling a wagon full of trash and she told me that the kids are always commenting that people need to pick up after themselves, that littering is bad, so they went out and did something about it!

Amanda goes on to say,

It's a truth we cannot avoid and seeing litter right next to a trash can is infuriating.

The City of Lewiston offers a community-wide clean up day, it kicked off two days ago and according to an article by Fox 23, community members were not only picking up trash but also recycling.

Amanda, along with her husband and kids went out to pick up trash because of the education they have received from Mr. Drew and His Animals Too.
