Rain Couldn’t Stop Djo From Delivering an Incredible Show in Portland, Maine

I'm not sure where I would be without doomscrolling.

Is it a mindless waste of time? Of course. However, sometimes it brings valuable information that can actually improve your life. For example, doomscrolling is what ultimately led me to a very wet Thompson's Point recently to enjoy one hell of a show.

I first heard the music of Djo on Instagram because his song "End of Beginning" was plastered across what felt like 90% of all videos. And for good reason—the song absolutely slaps.

Who is Djo?

Now, I had never heard of the artist before, so when a live video of Djo popped up on my feed, I was surprised to find out I knew exactly who he was: freaking Steve Harrington from Stranger Things! Or, in real life, actor and musician Joe Keery.

As a huge fan of his character on Stranger Things—and, more importantly, the one song I had heard—I immediately went and listened to his entire catalog. It's great. It's just fun synth-pop mixed with rock hooks and outstanding harmonies. I instantly fell in love.

So, when it was announced he was performing at Thompson's Point, I jumped on tickets like my dog jumps on a plate of food (he's a hound, so he jumps with reckless abandon).

Anyone who was at the show can attest that the weather was not ideal. Rain and wind made for some tricky conditions, but thankfully Thompson's Point has a large sheltered area. A few songs into Djo's set, though, a miracle occurred. The rain dissipated, the wind died down, and for about an hour, it was absolutely perfect.

Sometimes miracles really do come true.

How Great is a Djo Show to Experience?

As for the show itself, Djo and his band were outstanding. Tremendous energy and exceptional vocals fueled every song, and hearing them live really highlighted the numerous artists he clearly draws inspiration from, including The Beatles, David Byrne, and LCD Soundsystem.

It was also no surprise that Djo's stage presence was electric. I mean, the guy is a great actor, so of course he's going to knock that aspect out of the park. And I have to say, it all felt very genuine, which made the show even better.

The very best thing a musician can do is leave you wanting more, and that's exactly what happened. The very first thing I said to my wife was, "I hope he comes back next year," followed immediately by, "I need to go buy all of his music on vinyl."

A huge thank you to Djo for coming to Maine. Even a gross, rainy night couldn't dampen the spirits of a sold-out Thompson's Point crowd.
