New Mainers never make me stop chuckling.

If you've ever traveled outside of Maine much in your lifetime, you're probably accustomed to having people from away ask you stupid questions about living here. Whether it's completely misinformed beliefs about our winters, to people legit thinking Maine is either still part of Massachusetts, or we're part of Canada.

The first thing I wondered was if this person thinks somehow the beach deflects the snow? Or that maybe somehow the sand heated up and melted the snow?

Having traveled a fair amount over the years, I always feel like I've heard it all, and then something new comes along that actually surprises me. I feel like there are two questions new Mainers always want to know. Where they can see a moose, because they just hang out, waiting to be spotted. Or, always something to do with winter.

The winter/snow questions always give me the hardest chuckle.

Some folks think we have the worst winters on Earth (try living in upstate New York!) or have all these pre-conceived meteorological notions about winter based on TV, movies, and books. But this one person caught me with one I'd never heard before. One Reddit user asked if snow sticks to the sand on the beaches?! Uuhhhh, well, yeah......

The first thing I wondered was if this person thinks somehow the beach deflects the snow? Or that maybe somehow the sand heated up and melted the snow? Sure, at the tidal line, as one commenter pointed out, the ocean might swallow up some snow, but otherwise, yeah..... that beach is gonna have snow on it until the sun melts it.

Should I actually try and be nicer? Nah.....

Sure, a bunch of the beach won't, again because of the tide, but the rest needs the good, old sun. But seriously, how do people come up with these things? Do they just not understand the relationship between cold air and snow? And the cold ground and snow? Or that Maine is only truly magical in postcards?

It's always good for a chuckle. But I will likely never get tired of these questions. Crazy as they sound, it's gotta be nuts to from someplace that's nothing like Maine at all, and try to adapt to our little corner of the country. Maybe I should be nicer to these new imports. Nah... Where's the fun in that?
