A Facebook post has gone viral, written by the man who State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell stopped to help after he got into an accident. That stop later lead to Detective Campbell's tragic death when a tire came off a passing tractor trailer truck, striking and killing him.

The letter written by Facebook user Ved Lok, who later said his real name is Robert J. Anthony Jr., recounts the incident from his perspective. Some of the details may be difficult to read, but the message Anthony sends is one of sheer gratitude to Campbell for giving his life to save another.

According to News Center Maine, State Police did confirm that Robert J. Anthony Jr. was the person who Campbell assisted on the side of the road. The statement was made after his post went viral.

"I should have died twice today," Anthony writes. "I survived a high-speed spinout. When death came for me a second time, you were there. You traded your life for mine in the line of duty. I vow for as long as I live, I will never forget your smile. I will never forget your kindness. I will never forget your sacrifice. I owe you a debt I don't think I can repay. Rest in peace. May your soul find tranquility."

In his post below he goes into more detail about the event as it unfolded including his attempt to help Detective Campbell after he was struck.

Services for State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena.
