Former Red Sox World Series Champion Derek Lowe in Portland, Maine, Tomorrow
2004 Boston Red Sox
If you were old enough to either be alive or remember 2004, then you remember exactly where you were during the year the Boston Red Sox finally and fully went through with their "reverse the curse" motto.
After 86 years, they finally became World Series Champions once again. And there's no need to run through all the highlights because from the Dave Roberts stolen base to the Big Papi consecutive night walk-offs to the Johnny Damon grand slam and the flip from Keith Foulke to first base -- every event is engrained in our brains.
But one of the players that helped keep the Red Sox alive and come back from an 0-3 deficit in the ALCS against the New York Yankees and eventually win the World Series title? Derek Lowe.
And D-Lowe will be in Portland tomorrow afternoon to help announce an amazing charity event coming to Maine.
Drive Fore Kids
Tomorrow afternoon at Luke's Lobster on the Portland Pier in the Old Port of Portland, Maine, Derek Lowe will be on hand to help unveil the major celebrities that will be headed to Vacationland in June for the Drive Fore Kids Celebrity Golf Tournament.
According to a press release for the Drive Fore Kids, the tourney will be held at Falmouth Country Club from June 21st through June 24th. The best part? It's a fun few days to help our local Maine kiddos.
Barbara Bush Children's Hospital
While a sexy prize purse of $250,000 is up for grabs for the major celebrity names that will be announced at tomorrow's event at Luke's Lobster, the main reason for putting on the Drive Fore Kids, according to the press release, is to raise money for the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, whose mission it is to save every child's life possible, to put it simply and bluntly.
According to the Drive Fore Kids press release, over $100,000 in charitable donations is expected to be raised for the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, who is clearly the beneficiary of the tournament.
We'll find out tomorrow who the athletes, actors and TV personalities that will be participating in the Drive Fore Kids are, but since he's going to be on hand tomorrow, you have to think that Derek Lowe will be one of the athletes hitting the course in June.
And who knows, maybe on June 24h with the Drive Fore Kids tournament is all said done, we'll get a recreation of the above picture of D-Lowe, smoking a celebratory cigar for a job well done in raising money to keep our youngest Mainers as healthy as possible and nurse them back to a clean bill of health.
As of right now, though, we know six celebrities participating in this June's Drive Fore Kids: Retired LPGA golfer Blair O'Neal, former 6-time tennis champion Mardy Fish, former Red Sox stars Tim Wakefield and Kevin Millar, another former MLB pitcher in John Smoltz, and Maine's favorite son, Patrick Dempsey.
