Maine lawmakers are reportedly considering a plan to ban plastic bags statewide, a move that could make Vacationland among the first states to do so.

The Sun Journal is reporting that 20 Maine communities already either ban or restrict single-use plastic bags, and legislators might take action to ban them across the state soon, following the lead of California.

Maine is also considering a ban on styrofoam this year.

Bans and new restrictions on single-use items like plastic and styrofoam are usually driven by environmental concerns, but more and more debate is focused on the financial realities of banning or restricting items.
