Is It Really Illegal To Run Your Car Just For The AC In Maine?

Because we have such a short summer, and because we are so far north, we really don't have extended periods of super hot weather.  If we are lucky, REALLY lucky, we may get a handful of 90+ degree days.

That being said, there are always a few days each summer when we want to run our air conditioning on full blast.  Of course, when it comes to the ACs in our cars, it takes time for the car to cool down.  This can make the first few minutes of each ride really uncomfortable - especially if you have leather (or pleather) seats.

But, with all of the concerns about the environment these days, is it even legal to start your car up so you can let it cool down?

Not that it would stop you anyway, but it is legal to start your vehicle up to let the AC cool it down.  In most cases, at least.

According to the Maine Legislature website, in nearly all cases, a person may allow their personal vehicle to idle in order to cool the vehicle down (or to warm the vehicle up, in the winter)

Commercial vehicles, however, are not allowed to idle for more than five minutes in a sixty minute period of time.  The big exception to this rule, of course, is when the vehicle is stuck in traffic.  And, it is important to keep in mind that this applies to ALL commercial vehicles, not just big trucks.  So, it also applies to delivery vans, taxis, limos, etc.  Anything with a commercial plate.  Yes, even our radio station vehicles!
