Maine is unquestionably one of the prettiest states in America.

From its wondrous mountains to its iconic rocky coastline, the Pine Tree State is a cornucopia of scenic beauty.

But is there one spot that rises above the rest? Perhaps a patch of wilderness that has remained unspoiled, located on an island that very few ever travel to? Well, I have news for you: that place does exist. It's called Isle au Haut.

Maine's Most Stunning Island is Isle au Haut in Penobscot Bay

Located just a few miles off the Maine coast in Penobscot Bay is the tiny island of Isle au Haut. The island has two main features: the village of the same name and the section that is part of Acadia National Park.

In fact, 2,900 acres of the island are officially part of Acadia National Park. That amounts to about 60% of the island. It’s no wonder the town has such a small population (92 in 2020)—there’s simply no room for them.

The Island of Isle Au Haut is Stunning and Extremely Remote

Not only are these 2,900 acres immaculate, but they are also extremely remote. The vast majority of Acadia visitors will not even consider a ferry ride to reach the Isle au Haut portion of the park. Honestly, it's quite far from Mount Desert Island and not known for having any "famous" landmarks. Instead, it’s just a few thousand acres of perfectly crafted landscape—just as God intended.

Another beautiful attraction on the island is the iconic Isle au Haut Light. The lighthouse has been protecting sailors and awing residents for over 100 years. It also features the wonderfully preserved Victorian-style keeper's house, which perfectly captures the New England seaside culture.

The other must-see is watching the sunrise from Boom Beach on the east side of the island. This will be an experience you’ll never forget. Who needs Cadillac Mountain, when you can be enjoying the sunrise on a beach?

It's truly incredible how much there is to do on such a small island with such a small population. But that's what makes it so attractive. You’ll experience all that's amazing about the region, while rarely running into a soul.

Take a Ferry from Stonington to Reach Isle au Haut

Isle au Haut may not be the easiest place to get to, but it is well worth the effort. So, what are you waiting for? Go grab that ferry from Stonington and enjoy the ride to Maine’s most stunning island.
