Iconic Maine Amusement & Water Park Sets 2024 Opening Date
Even though we are still deep in the middle of a New England winter, there is no time like the present to start thinking about those family adventures you plan to take this summer.
For many families, the summer is not complete until they have had a chance to experience Funtown in Saco, Maine.
The park, which is located on Route 1 in Saco, has been helping families make memories for about six decades.
The attraction that would eventually become Funtown Splashtown got its start in the late 1950s. Brothers-in-law Ken Cormier and Andre Dellaire opened a series of businesses. Ther was a mini-golf course, a drive-in restaurant, batting cages, and a go-kart track. In 1967, the two incorporated their businesses as Funtown U.S.A.
Over the next few years, they added a bunch of rides, including a Zipper and Bayern Curve, along with bumper cars.
The park grew substantially in the '80s and '90s. During that time, the park added some amazing rides and attractions, like Excalibur (New England’s tallest wooden roller coaster), the Sea Dragon, and the Astrosphere.
In 1996, Cormier bought out Dellaire, added some water rides, and rebranded the park as Funtown Splashtown U.S.A.
The 2024 Funtown Splashtown season
According to the park’s website, Funtown will open for the season on Saturday, May 25. That’s the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The park will be open weekends through mid-June. After that, the park is open daily through Labor Day.
Because it will still be a little too cold for waterslides in mid-May, you'll have to wait a few more weeks for Splashtown to open for for the season. The waterpark will open for the season on Saturday, June 15.
One of the best new theme park attractions in the country
Even though the park has many iconic rides and attractions, one of the newest has gotten national attention.
Recently, USA Today named Whispering Pines Haunted Hotel one of the best new theme park attractions in the country. If you have ever had a chance to ride it, you know why it was chosen. It really is Disney-caliber.
