Even though we had been hearing about the potential danger that Winter Storm Fern posed since early last week, most of us believed that we really wouldn't have to deal with it here in New England.

Initially, it seemed like the worst of the storm was only going to come as far north as New York state.  Clearly, that was incorrect.

By the end of last week, it was obvious that we were going to be dealing with the worst true snowstorm we had seen in the better part of a decade.  The southern states got slammed with a mix of snow, sleet, ice, and rain.  That precipitation, helped along by high winds, led to hundreds of thousands of power outages. Here in Northern New England, our experience was quite different.  For the first time in years, we got slammed with a real snowstorm.

Fern dumped piles of light, fluffy snow on Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and parts of Massachusetts.  The benefit is that there is little danger of power outages.  The downside of the light fluffy snow is the fact that it can easily be blown around by a light wind.  This causes a reduction in visibility and can lead to dangerous driving conditions.
