According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, it's part of the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, which protects more than 20,000 acres of wetlands, forests, and waterways. It's also considered one of the Northeast's premier wildlife-watching destinations, especially if you're hoping to spot a moose or a bald eagle in its natural habitat. That's reason enough to plan a visit if you ask me.
