Tucked Into the Woods of Maine, Rooted Turns Dinner Into an Escape
There are plenty of places in Maine where you can eat local food. Rooted, tucked into the woods of Mount Vernon, is doing something a little different: it makes you feel like you’ve disappeared for the night.
And that, more than anything on the plate, is the reason to go.

A Dinner Party Hidden in the Woods
Rooted is small, rustic, intimate and honestly kind of magical. You’re driving into the woods, arriving at this warmly lit little building that feels somewhere between a cabin, a dinner party and a secret you were lucky enough to be let in on.
Nothing about it feels rushed. There’s one seating for the evening, and you’re actually encouraged to get up between courses, take your drink outside, sit around the fire and just hang out.
The Food Matters, But the Feeling Is the Point
Of course, the food matters. The prix fixe menu is vegetarian, changes with the season and leans heavily on local Maine farms and producers. But this isn't really a story about another farm-to-table restaurant. Maine has those.
What Rooted gets right is the atmosphere around the food. Dinner stretches out. The woods get darker. The building glows. Drinks happen around the fire. Conversation becomes part of the experience.
It feels less like you made a dinner reservation and more like someone invited you to a really beautiful dinner party in the middle of nowhere.
And sometimes, that’s exactly where you want to be.
