Dollar stores have been a staple in our country for decades. In fact, the first true dollar store was opened in Springfield, Kentucky, on June 1st, 1955. That’s right, when dollar stores were first invented, the Celtics had zero championships.

The most notable examples of modern ‘dollar stores’ are the large national retail chains like Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Family Dollar. The latter two aren’t really 'dollar stores,' but they carry many products with dollar options. Even at that point, most Dollar Tree products aren’t a dollar anymore.

Dollar Tree changed its standard price point from $1 to $1.25 in 2022, or as the company markets it, ‘$1.25 or Less.’

However, Dollar Tree slightly backtracked in 2023, reverting to the original $1 price point for several products. That being said, this was not a significant change, as they kept a good majority of their inventory with that extra quarter.

Additionally, Dollar Tree has always been known for affordable seasonal décor; however, they also launched their 'Dollar Tree PLUS' initiatives in certain markets. The new Plus concept allows the retailer to offer bigger, better, and higher-quality décor—similar to Family Dollar or Dollar General, where not everything is necessarily 'dollar store price.'

While things are getting more expensive in 2024, it’s not surprising that Dollar Tree has shifted its model. However, just because some things are factually cheaper doesn’t mean that the quality, quantity, or value is better or even equal to other store prices.
