There have been a lot of beloved retail chains going out of business over the last few years.

First Benny’s shut down all its stores, then Toys ‘R Us went out of business and even Christmas Tree Shops shuttered across the area just a few short years ago. Many of these stores are still missed today, but some are actually still trying to turn things around.

Just three years after leaving toy stores empty, Toys ‘R Us relaunched with mini stores inside Macy’s locations across the country. Now another retail chain is trying something similar.

It has barely been two years since the last Bed Bath & Beyond store closed on the SouthCoast. Now comes word that new brick-and-mortar locations could be opening before the end of the year.

From Bankruptcy to Comeback

Despite filing for bankruptcy and closing all of its locations in 2023, the home goods store is looking to stage a comeback. But things won’t look the way they did before.

Similar to the Toys ‘R Us return, Bed, Bath & Beyond will be reopening on a much smaller scale.

Business insiders reported last fall that the home goods store was staging its comeback by partnering with another retail giant, Kirkland’s, and opening smaller “neighborhood” style locations in cities across the country.

Where Will the First Stores Open?

These insiders believe it will be the East Coast where this comeback begins.

This Kirkland’s partnership means new Bed, Bath & Beyond locations, though in much smaller size. This time around the brick-and-mortar stores will be about 15,000 square-feet (just half the size they were before) and will feature a “more focused and curated selection of products.”

What This Means For Local Shoppers

Though it has been eight months since this plan was first announced, no new retail locations have arrived anywhere as of yet. The East Coast could mean anywhere from Maine to Florida, with many believing New Jersey will be the site of the first new Bed, Bath & Beyond.

However if five are ultimately opened to start, the SouthCoast could still end up with a new home goods store before the year ends.
