I've eaten a few bagels in my day...

Once upon a time, I used to own a bagel shop. We served breakfast and all that stuff. I loved working 100 hours a week and hardly ever sleeping so much, I sold it so someone else could enjoy that luxury. I won't name names, but the business is still thriving today, quite well.

I would say on average, we brought in between 250 and 300 bagels a day, and sold out almost every day. So it's pretty easy to draw a straight line between Mainers and their love of bagels. But do we really own the title of the biggest bagel eaters in the country? I guess that depends...

A while back, a survey was done by ShaneCo.com. They insisted that in fact, Mainers do eat all the bagels, with an average of about 74 bagels per year. This seems like a doable number. That works out to about 6 per month. Even that seems on the high side to me, but it certainly would indicate a strong love of bagels.

But Betway.com says Hawaii loves them the most, consuming a whopping 142 a year. Like, what? A dozen a month? 3 a week?! That seems a bit crazy. That's more carbs than just about anyone should consume. I love bagels, but three a week seems almost irresponsible, hahaha. Yet, also delicious.

Who should we really believe?

The survey saying Hawaii eats the most seems to have pretty inflated numbers overall. It says the average American eats 85 bagels a year, or 2 a week. Not impossible, but that's every single week. That's a bit nuts. Again, delicious... But nuts. Never mind that the Hawaii survey also says our favorite cream cheese flavor is strawberry.

That's just pure lunacy. So while I can't totally confirm or deny our standing in the world of bagel consumption, I can only indicate that one seems to have "normal" numbers, and the others seem absurd. So I guess, do you like your bagels normal, or absurd? Only you know...
