In my 20's cheap beer was actually cheap.

And craft beers were still a fairly new concept. Microbrews existed, but they weren't as ubiquitous as they are now. Maine has way more than its fair share of breweries at this point. But in my post-college/pre-responsible days, I put down an excessive amount of cheap beer.

There was this one brand I can't remember the name of, out of upstate New York and the bar I frequented at the time had this beer for $1.50 a pint. It was around 4.5% ABV, and did the trick just fine. And of course, there was always the perfect standby... Pabst Blue Ribbon. PBR was always an easy target, also for $1.50 for a tall boy.

These days, beer is just hardly ever cheap.

Mainers even get the double whammy. Not only do we have gloriously delicious beer, but it costs an arm and a leg. It's not uncommon to spend nearly $20 on a 4-pack. And there's the double whammy... It's only sold in 4-packs. What happened to 6-packs? Cheap beer needs all the help it can get sometimes, which is why it probably comes in 30-packs for the same price as a 4-pack of craft beer.

On the other hand, as much as Mainers love our craft beer, we do take great pride in the "cheap" beers we like too. I mean, who doesn't love a good 5-star meal? But sometimes your just as happy with gas station pizza. But if you were asked to make a choice, which cheap beer would you choose?

Mainers had this very conversation on Reddit...

After I read through the post on Reddit, I polled my coworkers and and their answers pretty much mirrored the vibe on Reddit. If you actually scroll through all the comments and keep tab, you'll find that it's pretty much a tie among Mainers, that we would prefer either Pabst Blue Ribbon, or Narragansett.

When I was a kid, Narragansett was Grampy beer. But it's had kind of renaissance in the last several years. Natty Light was also in the running, but just couldn't keep up with PBR and 'Gansett. Very conspicuous that Bud and Bud Light didn't make the cut, and Coors was also barely mentioned. But hey... now you know this useless fact about Mainers.

Let's look at some killer Maine craft brews as well. Keep scrolling...
