Now that Maine’s insanely never ending 14-month winter is finally over, it feels like everybody has been released back onto the roads without any summer driving practice whatsoever.

All winter long we’re cautious, slow, and white-knuckling it through the ice and snowstorms… then the second the roads clear up, we collectively all lose our minds like we’ve escaped our cages with fresh freedom. 

So, we must revisit the unspoken driving rules. Because if you’ve lived here long enough, you know exactly when tourist season hits, it’s usually the moment somebody stops in the middle of Route 1 because they want a picture.

However, it’s not just the tourist that need a lesson, we local are insane too. There are just certain things that instantly drive Mainers insane every summer.

From oversized campers drifting into the passing lane to people panic-braking because they missed a turn, summer driving in Maine can feel like a full-contact sport sometimes.

Add in potholes, speeding motorcycles, and trash just flying out windows, and yeah… we could all probably use a little refresher course.

So as another Maine summer starts again, let’s all collectively take a deep breath, drive a little smarter, and maybe try not to make driving in summer unpleasant.
