If Christmas lights are your thing, these displays will make you smile.

Christmas lights are such a big part of what makes the holidays special. If you don't think so, drive down a road in a festive neighborhood at night in June, and drive down that same road in December. It's a whole different feeling.

This year, a lot of families who have put on light shows aren't doing them. There are several reasons why it's not happening. For some, these 'shows' require a lot of time and planning, and well, sometimes time is not as plentiful as we'd like around the holidays. Most of the light displays recommended are free, but some do cost money. I left off Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, as that is a very well-known event. Some of these are the lesser-known light shows that are worth the trip.

Lights have always been one of my favorite parts of the season. One of my absolute favorite things is to drive through downtown Portland. That's one of the listed places to see amazing lights. Downtown Portland hires Pandora Lacasse (and Ashley Page this year) to do their magic to the trees and buildings throughout.

The trees wrapped in lights are nothing short of breathtaking. I feel lucky that I get to drive into Portland every day for work. If you don't work or live in Portland, I cannot stress enough how it's worth the trip, no matter where you are.
