This was an experience I'll never forget.

You always hear about Maine growing the best-tasting blueberries in the world, but you never hear about why.

Well, it's because we are home to the blueberry capital of the world (the blueberry barrens) right in Cherryfield, Maine.

However, that doesn't mean you can just pop it into your GPS and go find the massive blueberry field very easily.

From personal experience, it'll take some hiking, walking, four-wheeling, and a little frustration to get to, but once you find it, you'll find the experience magical.

Here's some information you'll want to know going into this journey.

Where are the Maine Blueberry Barrens located?

Cherryfield, Maine. This is very, very up north almost bordering Canadian land. According to bluebarrens.com, they're located across 200 acres in Cherryfield, Township 25, Wesley, and South Trescott.

The farm is located at 11 High Street, Cherryfield, ME 04622

What exactly are Blueberry Barrens?

Blueberry barrens are large, open areas of sandy soil in the coastal regions of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, characterized by lowbush and velvet-leaf blueberry shrubs as livinglandscapeobserver would describe them.

Did Maine's Blueberry Barrens really form from glaciers?

Yes. In fact, the barrens were born as a result of erosion 13,000 years ago. According to newengland.com,

"All of Maine’s wild blueberries are part of an indigenous network of underground runners that grow along the rugged coastal lands of northern Maine, Atlantic Canada, and Quebec".

When I stepped out of the truck, the barren had a rocky landscape to it for miles and miles. This rocky landscape is otherwise known as “the barrens” and is the product of a glacial retreat that occurred more than 13,000 years ago.

It's really cool to see it all up close considering some of these infamous blueberry bushes are tucked in-between rocks yet still growing, thriving, and producing berries.
