The building that was Denny's for years and empty for a couple is 'under contract'.

That means rumors are flying about what could be coming. It's centrally located in the Libbytown neighborhood in Portland at 1091 Congress Street. But it seems like no business will be moving in.

This Denny's on Congress Street closed back in 2022. That was the last one in Greater Portland, as the Brighton Avenue location closed in 2018. The closest Denny's now is on Court Street in Auburn. The building has been quiet since this sign went up.

Two little words have people wondering what will replace Denny's: 'under contract'. When Denny's closed, the Press Herald reported that the restaurant was renting the space and the building was sold. It forced them out. The Press Herald said,

The building will be used for a different purpose, but it was not clear what that might be.

Currently, Construction Connect shows that the building is up for demolition and removal! Wait, so NO business is going into the central location?

What could replace Denny's on Congress Street in Portland?

Some online say that the Maine Department of Transportation purchased the building to remove it and build a roundabout! That area with the little park is an odd area of Portland. It's almost a roundabout as it stands. It's a weird area, with exits and entrances to I295 flanking it.

Does anyone have a definitive word on what will happen? Because a roundabout is about as boring as you can get.
