Movie About a Dog Filmed in Portland, Maine, is Fantastic
What a surprisingly fun, sweet film about Portland, Maine oh, and a dog.
If you haven't heard, Matt Cascella and Jen Cordery moved to Portland from New York City in 2020 to Portland, Maine. According to the Portland Press Herald, the married filmmaking duo thought their new home would be a perfect place to film 'Hangdog'. They split duties with Jen writing and Matt directing the film.
A low-budget movie shot entirely in Portland, Maine that's so good!
'Hangdog' is about a couple who moved to Portland, Maine because the wife's father had a heart attack. The wife, Wendy, has a dog Tony, the love of her life. Walt, her husband, puts up with the dog, but they've never really bonded. Then she goes on a business trip and he's in charge of Tony for three days. He promptly gets Tony stolen as he goes to buy a joint for his anxiety.
Why pick Portland, Maine to shoot a movie?
The Press Herald asked the couple why they wanted to make a film in Portland.
First of all, it’s just a city you don’t see on film a lot. It’s dynamic and has a lot of range to it. On the Eastern Prom, you’re looking at the ocean and all these islands. Then you’re in the Old Port, with the cobblestone streets. We were feeling burnt out in New York City, where oddly it’s hard to film things. But here, since it doesn’t happen often, it was easier, and people were a lot more excited to help us out. So it just made sense to us, and we were feeling inspired to tell this tale.
How you can watch 'Hangdog' filmed in Portland, Maine
It's streaming now on Prime and Apple TV. It's worth the three or four dollars. If nothing else, the shots of the Old Port, Casco Bay Ferry, Peaks Island, Eastern Promenade, and Munjoy Hill are just so endearing. Plus, it's a really good movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought it was well acted, made me laugh out loud and I enjoyed all the crazy characters. I hope this proves you CAN film movies in Maine, even though there aren't a lot of tax incentives.
