These Are the 20 Largest Towns in Maine—And They’re Huge

Maine is a vast state, with swaths of uninhabited land—heck, that’s uniquely part of its charm.

There’s nothing quite like driving through certain areas and seeing signs for places like “T2 R9” and other oddly named territories. It’s all part of what makes Maine special. We love our peace, remoteness, serenity, and lack of traffic.

Maine Has Many Large Towns Based on Square Mileage

Maine is also home to some surprisingly large towns. In fact, 48 of the state’s municipalities cover 50 square miles or more, a remarkable number for the Pine Tree State.

While you’ll find them in 11 of Maine’s 16 counties, it’s no surprise that a significant portion are located in the northern part of the state. Aroostook, Penobscot, and Piscataquis counties are well represented. However, the western foothills also make a respectable showing.

The largest town in Maine is Allagash, which also happens to be the only town with an area exceeding 100 square miles, 128.6, to be exact. The remaining towns are a great representation of communities across the state, each with its own unique identity.
