To say life in Maine is slower than other places in the country is probably an understatement. People in the Pine Tree State go about their business every day, and for better or worse, not a lot happens in Maine. And that's ok.

But when something does happen and then keeps happening over and over again, people take notice. Especially when the thing that keeps happening over and over again doesn't make much sense to the majority of the population.

By now, we've all heard about the infamous yellow pole at the Walmart in Auburn, Maine. There have been far too many accidents with this inanimate object over the past several years. Some of those accidents have actually totaled vehicles.

The spotlight turned that yellow pole from famous to infamous. Just recently, another accident took place with the infamous yellow pole at Walmart. The parade of misadventures has led to global coverage, with claims the pole has been hit over 200 times.

After years or calamity, the yellow pole at Walmart in Auburn is finally being recognized for more than just a purveyor of misfortune. But not by any city or state officials.

It's notoriety has led Google to give it an official declaration. Shared in the group "Lewiston Rocks" on Facebook, the Walmart yellow pole in Auburn is now a 'historical landmark'.

Google Maps can be manipulated by savvy users, but the idea that people remain so passionate about the legacy of the yellow pole is incredible. Google now recognizes it prestigiously alongside other historical landmarks in the twin cities, like the restored Engine House, the Continental Mill, or the stunning Anthony Fireplace.

People in both Lewiston and Auburn can now tell their kids and their kids' kids that they grew up in a time when a simple traffic device turned into an international incident and made history. What a time to be alive.
