Bar Harbor, Maine, Spot Named Best Hidden Gem in the State, Except It Doesn’t Actually Exist
You could spend hours upon hours scrolling through best and worst of lists published by various outlets on the internet. Heck, we're one of those places that does that very thing as well.
But occasionally, some of those lists seem to be dramatically different from the others. That always comes with a little skepticism, but also excitement. Perhaps someone has a few more secrets than everyone else, and they're ready to reveal them.
A recent list published late last year features the best hidden gem in every state across the country. It's a tantalizing premise for many people; become knowledgeable about the hidden gem before it becomes not-so-hidden anymore.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that the website chose a place in one of Maine's most popular tourist destinations, Bar Harbor. But there is a big problem with the specific place chosen. Why? Because it doesn't actually exist.
The website chose Vintage Bargain Barns in Bar Harbor. A quick Google search will reveal there is no business that operates in Bar Harbor or the surrounding towns with that name. It's possible that the publisher was being more broad with their suggestion, stating all vintage bargain barns in the area are hidden gems.
If that was the case, there are notable ones. Maybe they were referencing a popular local landmark, the Tool Barn. Unfortunately, the Tool Barn has officially closed down as of late last year.
Or perhaps they meant to feature the Big Chicken Barn. Visitors revel in the treasure trove of antiques and oddities found at the year-round spot in Ellsworth. Again, it's not Bar Harbor, but it's close.
Chances are the best hidden gem is going to stay a well-kept secret, because it doesn't even exist at all.
