Live Theatre: Southern Maine’s Summer Stage Lineup

Summer is here in Maine. A few shorts months of the beach, camping, hiking, grilling... all the good outdoor stuff that we anxiously await every year. So far, Mother Nature has been kinder to us than last year, but we are still going to have rainy days.

There are plenty of indoor things to do in Maine when the weather doesn't cooperate; movie theaters, restaurants, breweries, museums and live theater! From Portland to Ogunquit, it appears that we are in for a season of drama, laughs, music, and unforgettable performances.

Here’s what’s going down:

Portland Stage Company in Portland is presenting The Last Five Years from July 10 to August 1. This one is a musical rollercoaster of love and heartbreak. If you cry easily, you might want to have some tissues in your pocket. Then (it doesn't get more local than this), brace yourself for Almost, Maine from August 12 to 29. Because honestly, what’s better than a play about our own little state?

Down in Ogunquit, the famous Ogunquit Playhouse has a pretty awesome lineup. A Little Night Music runs from July 18 to August 17, and stars the amazing Kathleen Turner. With six Tony Awards under its belt, this laugh-out-loud musical was inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 film Smiles of a Summer Night, and is a must-see. Then, Little Shop of Horrors will take over from August 22 to September 21. It tells the story of Seymour Krelborn, a timid floral assistant, and Audrey II, the plant with a taste for human blood. Based on Roger Corman’s film, this show stars RuPaul’s Drag Race legend Latrice Royale as the bloodthirsty Audrey II.

Killer Comfort will be at the Falmouth Footlights Theater. This comedy gem is running through August 30, every Friday at 7:30 PM. Lynne’s multimedia solo show teaches you how NOT to get murdered... and will make you laugh? I can get down with that.  You can also catch The Best Part Of My Life: The MAMA CASS ELLIOT Story from July 24 to August 29. Eliza Ruth Watson shines as “Mama” Cass Elliot, the legendary singer of The Mamas & The Papas. This tribute brings her short but impactful life to the stage, and features her hits performed live with full orchestrations.

Finally, live theater doesn't always need to be indoors. If you're looking to catch a show and still be outside, summer in Portland always includes Shakespeare in the Park at Deering Oaks with Fenix Theatre. These local legends are back with Love’s Labor’s Lost from July 11 to August 3, directed by Katelyn Manfre. Performances are free, but donations are always welcome.
