Many Maine Customers Could See Lower Spectrum Internet Prices
There's an old phrase you'll hear around Maine often. When something is expensive, people may tell you it'll cost you "an arm and a leg". For the last several years, Mainers have felt that way about their high speed internet service from Spectrum.
While it hasn't reached the definition of a full blown monopoly, Spectrum has had a stranglehold on the majority of customers in the most populated areas of the Pine Tree State.
In each of the last several years, Spectrum has raised the monthly cost for high speed internet. The majority of customers in central and southern Maine who have Spectrum average a $65 to $85 per month bill for their internet service.
According to CNET, that is going to change for many customers. Thanks to some aggressive, increased competition, Spectrum is rolling out a new pricing plan that the company hopes will keep its current customer base while attracting new customers.
It's being called the Customer Commitment Initiative. Spectrum has boosted the download speeds of almost all of its current customers without an added cost.
New customers or customers moving to bundle their internet, cable television and cell phone service could see huge savings, with some internet plans starting at just $30 per month.
While it's a step in the right direction for Spectrum, there will be questions on whether it's enough. Spectrum is seeing intense competition from fiber optic internet providers as well as mobile internet providers. Those providers having been doing extensive work to expand their network while offering faster speeds at a lower cost than Spectrum.
Faster speeds for all customers? Yes. Actual lower prices for all customers in Maine? No. Spectrum should take one more step and make that an actuality.
