Comedian, ‘Inside Out’ Star Lewis Black Reveals His Hilarious No. 1 Favorite Thing About New Englanders
Lewis Black has been on many New England stages in his long career as a comedian.
Having spent that much time here, it's a good assumption that he would get to know something about us. His answer is hilariously on point.
According to Lewis himself in an interview with me, what he loves most about New Englanders is "how bitter you guys are."
Lewis Black plays the emotion/character "Anger"
What Makes Lewis Black the Angriest?
Because of the character of "Anger" in Inside Out and Inside Out 2, I had to ask Lewis what makes him the angriest. His response was, "When Authority gets stupid, which is a lot of the time. I'm not big on authority and I never have been."
Lewis said that Pixar created the character around his own personality traits.
Boston, Massachusetts is where Lewis Black Learned a lot about stand up Comedy
Lewis continued to say, "Boston is where I learned a lot about stand up. The audiences up there have always been great. The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom (in NH) is one of the most unique, most fun, most extraordinary venues in the country. If you've not been in that room, I guarantee you, it's worth the trip. It's a lot of fun."
How Do Comics Face Challenges of Being a Comic, Given the Divisive Climate We Live in Now?
"That doesn't bother me. I just got tired of fighting the audience. What I find more difficult is trying to get people to know that you're coming to town. That's just getting harder and harder. Anybody who figures that out..... is going to be crowned a genius and make billions and billions of dollars."
Given Lewis Black's career and all he's done, what is his favorite thing to do?
"It's Stand Up. And I like doing voice over. I like that a lot. Especially with Pixar, they came up with that character for me. ("Anger" in Inside Out / Inside Out 2) It's kind of a replica in animated form of me. It's unbelievable. But, I love stand up."
Lewis Black's advice for new comics
"Find ways of being seen on social media. More importantly, I would get up and do show after show, no matter how many people in the room. You don't have to worry about your "likes," what you have to worry about is being funny and the only way to learn how to be funny is to stand up, take your knocks. Wake up the next day, come back and do it again, again and again until you're comfortable."
What would people not expect from Louis Black?
"I'm a little too sweet at times."
When you see Lewis on TV, he seems so angry, but he really was a sweet guy to talk to. As a New Englander, I tried not to sound "bitter" either.
