Did You Know the Oldest Home in Massachusetts is Over 380 Years Old?

As someone who appreciates all things history, this writer loves living in one of the oldest parts of the country.

Massachusetts is home to 192 National Historic Landmark alone, and an additional 85 can be found within our neighboring states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

But these landmarks are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Bay State's past. There are countless centuries-old homes that may not be national landmarks, but still stand today and remind us of days gone by.

Among these properties, which one is the oldest? When was it constructed? We have the answer.

The Fairbanks House in Dedham, Massachusetts

The Fairbanks House is not only the oldest house in the Commonwealth, but the oldest known timber-framed house in the country.

According to the property's website, two English Puritans named Jonathan and Grace Fairbanks first arrived in the US with their six children in 1633. After being granted 12 acres of land, their house was constructed between 1637-1641. For the next 268 years, eight generations of Fairbanks would live within its walls.

The last family member to reside in the home moved out in 1904. From there, "Fairbanks family members established the Fairbanks Family in America, Inc. in order to purchase the house and preserve it for future generations. "

Today, The Fairbanks House is a historic house museum open for tours from May through October. They've even hosted annual family reunions for descendants. How cool is that?
